PES 2012 Game Review: PES 2012 will have to pull some pretty tricks out of the bag if it wants to topple the FIFA 12 from top of the virtual football league. Last year's installment was the 1st time since the move to the next generation that the Pro Evolution Soccer series actually evolved, brings a fresh new game engine that breathed new life into the tired legs of an ageing franchise. Almost every are of the game has been improved, although a few long standing issues remain. It is still lacking authentic clubs, competitions and leagues. The Champion League is available, as the "South American Copa Santander Libertadores" while the French, Spanish, & Dutch leagues are all present & accounted for. Unfortunately, only Manchester United and Tottenham fans are catered for from England, while lower league clubs such as Middlesbrough remain absent. The inevitable team & player update are lacking the lower league clubs limit the strength & depth of the management mode, although Master League is more enjoyable than ever this year. Players can customize their character into the dressing room & deal with budgets, tactics and transfers, while attempting to win over the board, fans & players. A number of cutscenes helps in moving the action along, which adds a little flavour to a mode. Some touches like the assistant manager briefs you on the opposition & their hazardous players prove both useful & entertaining. The big change on the field comes in the form of "off-the-ball" control. While holding the ball up in bombing down the wing or in midfield, players click & move the right analogue stick in a direction of teammate to control their movement. There are several levels of assistance available, but with the computer making automatic forward runs, It is a tough skill to master, essentially puts the players in charge of 2 footballers at the same time. Almost every aspect of the PES gameplay experience can be customized. Everything from passing assist, cursor changes & management control can be turned down or up, on or off. The online mode has been improved, but is still behind FIFA in terms of what is on offer. One new feature is called myPES, that adds an increasingly fashionable Social Media element to the game.
