The Cave (Video Game) Review: The Cave 2013 is an adventure packed game created by Double Fine Productions and released by Sega in the year 2013 for the Wii U, PS3, Xbox 360 gaming consoles via their popular storefronts and on Steam for Linux, Windows and Mac OS X. This title was made by Ron Gilbert, based on a spectacular idea that he has had for nearly 20 years of his life, concerning a cave that lures humans into it so to uncover the darker side of their personality. The Cave 2013 draws concepts from Maniac Mansion, his earlier game launched in 1987, where the gamer used to choose 3 separate characters from a cast of 7 to explore the mysterious Cave. Many of the in-game puzzles required the trio to work in perfect coordination to solve, while some of the puzzles were specifically presented according to the unique capabilities of a game character; in this way the Cave can only be explored thoroughly through multiple player characters.
The Cave (Video Game) Story: The Cave's plot is centered on a magical cave that talks, containing a labyrinthine set of tunnels within it. The cave is voiced by Stephen Stanton. A total of 7 characters, chosen from across time and space and harboring darkest of the secrets, have come to the Cave, thinking that they can actually learn something about themselves and who they might become as told by Gilbert. In one case, a knight character, seeking a priceless amulet, meets a princess who owns that amulet. She is in distress from a dragon, now instead of rescuing the princess , he lures the dragon into eating her and then recovers the treasure he desired(the amulet) for himself when the dragon coughs it up.
The Cave (Video Game) Gameplay: At the beginning of this game, the gamer chooses 3 of the 7 characters, which are then locked to for the rest of the game; gamers can restart a new game to choose a different team of characters as chosen previously. These characters are focused on stereotypical figures, like a pair of orphans (pretending to be a single character), a scientist and a hillbilly. As the gamer controls the 3-member team to explore the magical Cave, they gather objects and interacts with their surroundings in a way resembling an adventure game. The exploration of the Cave as depicted in the game is based on 2-D platformer gaming elements, though the game is designed with 3-D graphical elements.
The Cave (Video Game) Ratings: The Cave 2013 was awarded with mixed reviews, with many journalists praising the wit and humor of Double Fine and Gilbert, but found the puzzles to be very easy and requiring a lot tiring traversing of non-dangerous areas of the mystical Cave. Aggregating review websites GameRankings and Metacritic granted the PS3 game version seventy-three percent and 73 out of 100 rating, the Xbox 360 version received seventy-two percent and 70 out of 100 rating, the PC version sixty-eight percent and 68 out of 100 rating and finally the Wii U version obtained sixty-two percent and 72 out of 100 rating.
